Last night I spent 30 minutes on YouTube watching a video on the final ascent up Angels Landing. It totally freaked me out but now I am determined to do it! Angels Landing is listed as a "strenuous climb with long drop offs. Not for young children or anyone fearful of heights. The last section is a route along a steep narrow ridge to the summit". Google it if you don't believe me!
I figure if I do the first leg of it, to Scouts Lookout, I can always turn back. The climb for the first 2 miles is a strong vertical climb. The scenery is breathtaking.
This is a series of switchbacks that have been named Walters Wiggles.
Almost to the top!
And there it is, the summit
There are chains to help you climb and guide your way but part way up I look and see Richard standing on an unprotected piece only feet from the edge and that does it. I can't go any further and have to turn around. The climb is physically a piece of cake but the fear has gotten the better of me. I am so disappointed in myself!
We make our way the 2 miles down and have some lunch at the bottom.
Safe and sound at the bottom!
After a little tour to the west of Zion to Virgin we decide to head back to the trailer. But wait.....we haven't done the Canyon Overlook trail that starts just before the 1.1 mile tunnel going in to the park.
The hike is only about 1 mile round trip so we start the climb. So glad we didn't miss this.
Maidenhair ferns growing prolifically in this cave.
The view from the top looking down at the road leading into Zion.
